10 Common Mistakes People Do Running A Home-Based Business

23 May 2009 No Comment

Building a home-based business can be a fruitful endeavor, but at the same time it can also be a very daunting task. Before you take the plunge and start building your business from home, have a look at ten of the most common mistakes, so that you can avoid them and save yourself from a myriad of stress and worry.

1. Trying To Make Everything Work From A Single Website

If you’re just starting out with your home-based business, don’t try to take on the bigwigs and try to be all things to all people.  Find your niche and stick with it; once you’ve made a success out of it, you can start to expand your repertoire.

2.  Some Of Your Actions Equate To Spamming

While it may be a no-brainer to not send spam email, keep in mind that some types of forum posting can also be considered spam.  Most forums have pretty clear rules about what is acceptable; some are stricter than others, but no reputable forum will accept out and out advertisements.  Forum posting and email campaigns can be a great way to reach you audience; just make sure that your sending quality information to a targeted audience. The short-term benefits of spamming aren’t worth the long-term effect of losing your credibility, not to mention the possibility of fines or being shut down.

3.  Not worrying about credibility

When starting your home-based business, you don’t have a large corporation or name behind you.  You have to build your credibility from the ground up, and it’s a lot easier to lose than to gain. Stand behind your product or service, treat your customers with respect and be completely transparent in all your business dealings and you’ll be fine.

4.  Sitting back and expecting results

While it is possible to run a home-based business that will make money automatically, it doesn’t start out that way.  All businesses require time and effort to establish. Passive income doesn’t magically work.  Once you’ve put in a lot of hard work, you may be able to generate revenue with a minimal amount of work.  You must still maintain the business, however; ignore any venture completely (no matter how successful) and it will fail.

5.  Forgetting To Research Your Niche Market

Does a market exist for your product?  Are there too many products already in the market? Once you’ve identified them, concentrate your efforts. The more specific a target you can identify, the more effective your marketing efforts will be.

6.  Using Ineffective Marketing

Most people make the mistake of promoting the features of their product.  While it’s important to know what the features are, what sells the product are the benefits, not features.  People make decisions based on emotion, not logic.  Make sure to address what’s in it for them – how does the product or service relate to them and their lives?

7.  Forgetting The Importance Of Building Relationships

If you treat your customers with importance and with respect, they are likely to return the favor by repeat business or referrals. People love the feeling of being important and being of value; if you give them this it will pay you back handsomely.

8.  You Don’t Consider Your Home-Based Business As A Real Business

If your home-based business didn’t cost much to start up, you may start thinking that you won’t have much to lose if it fails. Also, you may underestimate the amount of work that working from home entails. In many ways, it’s more work than working at a conventional job.

9.  Not having a plan

Even in the brick and mortar world of businesses, the absence of a good business plan leads to to failure. The reason for this is that in order to be successful in any business online or otherwise, you need to have a set of definable and attainable goals. These goals can be set in terms of weeks, months or years, and no matter which, they are what will keep you focused in achieving the levels of success that you pre-determine for your business.

10.  You Don’t Take The Time To Learn

Things are changing everyday on the internet.  In order to grow with the times and keep your business relevant, you must keep abreast of any changes, both specifically in you market and in the business world in general.  Make use of any innovations or technology which can help make your home-based-business more efficient and productive such as the technology and training provided by Portal Feeder.

These ten mistakes are ones that you can quite easily avoid when building your online business. Learn them well and not make them ever again, and you will have a lot easier time in making money online.
